If we've ever spent a significant amount of time together, you’ll know that I drink nothing but water (and herbal tea). I won’t go too much into it but you can read back at a blog entry I wrote about it.
I know that my little blog won’t change the world but if I had the power, I’d like to see Coke and Pepsi products off the market. Lost cause? Maybe. It’s everyone’s educated choice to choose what they buy and consume. I’m only here to hope you make the healthier choice more often.
What’s good about Coke and Pepsi?
It makes a great cleaning product. Gets rid of rust, cleans pennies and I’ve even heard a car battery which had acid crystal residue on it was washed away with a soak in Coke. Think about what it does in your body? Sound good now?
What’s good about Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi?
I know that many people who are addicted to Diet Soda will claim, ‘it wakes me up’ or ‘I like the flavour’. Sure it has no calories and less sugar than regular coke but Aspartame isn't exactly safe either. Here’s a good article to give Diet soda drinkers something to think about
If aspartame induces hunger, I don’t see how this zero calorie drink will help you loose weight.
Gatorade and PowerAde
If you didn't already know, these are Coke (Gatorade)and Pepsi (PowerAde) products. Athletes and major sports teams are promoting them. With that kind of backing behind it, it’s no wonder so many people are drinking it. I’m not disagreeing that your body needs electrodes after strenuous activity. (and we’re talking hours of intense exercise, like a marathon which most sports drinkers aren’t doing). If you’ve ever seen the sugar and sodium content in them, it’s almost ironic that so many athletes are drinking it. I’ve had many arguments with people who swear by Gatorade. In all my years of training, I’ve never tried it. I’m here to attest that I’ve never fainted or had symptoms of dehydration after drinking good old water. Here is an interesting article about using Coconut drink as an alternative…if water isn’t cutting it.
Summary
Read labels. Try to keep the sodium, high-fructose corn syrup and sugar down. A squeeze of a citrus fruit or a blend of berries add some sweetness to your water. A balanced diet of healthy proteins and carbohydrates as well as plenty of fruit and vegetables should keep your body ready for an active lifestyle.
